First Grade

First graders focus on building their phonics skills, learning to decode words and read fluently. They explore stories by identifying main ideas, characters, and events, and begin writing simple opinions, informative pieces, and personal narratives with basic grammar and sentence structure. In math, they strengthen their addition and subtraction skills within 20 and explore place value and counting up to 120. Students also focus on social-emotional development by practicing self-regulation, empathy, and respect for others as they learn to work cooperatively and resolve conflicts.
