For the second straight year, Irving Elementary received a Colorado Department of Education Center of Excellence Award. In addition, Haaff Elementary School earned a Governor's Distinguished Improvement Award for the first time.

On hand to accept the honors from state education officials in Denver were Irving Principal Jaime Schwab and Haaff Principal Betsy DeCesaro. Both school principals were joined by Superintendent Dr. Barbara Kimzey.

Each year, the Colorado Department of Education recognizes public schools that enroll a student population of which at least 75% are at-risk pupils and that demonstrate the highest rates of student longitudinal growth -- as measured by the Colorado Growth Model -- with a Center of Excellence Award.

Irving was one of only 18 schools statewide to earn the award.

“Receiving the Center of Excellence Award for the second straight year is a powerful testament to the heart and tireless dedication of the Irving community,” said Principal Schwab. “Our team has a collective commitment to maximize instructional time and foster a culture of data-informed instruction that meets students’ needs. I am incredibly proud of our school for their hard work and the learning environment they create for our children to learn, thrive, and reach their full potential.”

The Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Awards are given to schools that demonstrate exceptional student growth. On the state school performance framework used to evaluate schools, Haaff is among the schools that "exceed" expectations on the indicator related to longitudinal academic growth at all grade levels.

“This recognition is a direct reflection of the relentless hard work of our staff, the deep commitment we share with the Haaff community, and the positive culture we’ve built together,” said Principal DeCesaro. “Our students show up each day ready to give their best, take pride in their growth, and support one another. The Colorado Governor’s Award for Distinguished Improvement belongs to every teacher, every student, and every family who believes in what we’re building here at Haaff.”

Superintendent Kimzey praised the leadership and staff of Irving and Haaff in receiving these honors.

“We are incredibly proud of Principal Schwab and Principal DeCesaro and their hard-working staffs! These awards reflect the dedication of their staffs, students, and families, and prove that, in D60, we are committed to creating thriving schools that ensure our students reach their full potential.

Education Commissioner Susana Cordova said these awards reflect the progress and growth being made by Irving and Haaff.

“Across Colorado, we’re seeing schools and districts turn bold ideas into meaningful action for students,” said the commissioner. “These awards highlight the real progress happening in classrooms every day — where strong teaching, thoughtful leadership, and a clear focus on student engagement and outcomes are helping more young people build the skills, confidence, and readiness they need for what comes next.”
